++Kasich came into South Carolina at 2%.
++Now it's Trump at 35%.
KASICH 15%
Rubio 14%
Cruz 12%
Bush 10%
++Both Trump and Kasich last night tried to appeal to working class white Democrats. The reason--South Carolina is an open primary. Josh Marshall had an interesting observation that the reason South Carolina has a fondness for the Bush family is a Southern thing about "respected" families even though there is an undercurrent of political violence . A southern thing.
++I don't think Senator Shortpants Rubio is very substantive but Josh actually thinks he is toast after last night. Marshall feels Trump wins by dragging the GOP down to his level. He wins in that situation. Marshall is right that Jeb got into his face on the bankruptcies and Trump got mad. But I sensed he was already mad going into the debate and that was just one of those things to kick off a reaction.
++The side notes at 538 from viewers made it clear that they thought the Donald won and was not allowed to answer Cruz assertions about him supporting "partial-birth" abortions. That actually flummoxed Trump.
++The Donald continues to score with his self-funding line and the fact that the audiences of the last two debates were indeed stacked with donors and political operatives. While he has been booed more in the last two debates,his calling the audience out has neutralized their effect.
++Sam Wang over at Princeton Election Project says the "establishment" GOP is running up against a February deadline to narrow the field down and a March deadline to get it down to two persons. If they don't the Donald can in fact win the nomination with only 30% of the votes because we go into winner take all primaries.
