Ezra Klein persuasively argues that Hillary's genius was to force Trump to act certain ways at certain times of the campaign. Trump's campaign manager tonight muttered that with a popular President and first Lady campaigning for her she should be in the 52 to 53% already.
Klein says the campaign's genius was not Hillary's performance but her training Trump to fall in time-consuming traps that ate away his chances. Klein points to how her lead increased after each debate because of his blundering. He says we aren't used to viewing campaigns this way but that it was not inevitable that Clinton would win this thing. She designed it. Klein reminds us that Trump went after 13 reasonably qualified rivals in the primaries but Hillary would not let Trump define her.
In short it became a referendum on him , not her.
