You Fasten the Trigger for Others To Fire
++Glenn Greenwald in his new book referred to the bellicose nature of the Washington Post. I thought it was just I've become intemperate in my old age.
++But Martin Longman at Washington Monthly just posted a piece with the above title and a withering critique of the Post's impulse to war. He points out that no one at the Post who advocates endless deployments of our troops have ever been to war.
++He then eviscerates Charles Krauthammer for his characterization of the Afghanistan withdrawal as a symptom of "Obama's narcissism".
++In his West Point speech, Obama did say the United States should lead the world but not succumb to the temptation of rushing to war.
++I am surprised that bloggers are getting hip to the Post's War Jones. I find it unsettling on a daily basis.

++A good article in Time by Massimo Calabresi, "A Benghazi Scandal That's Already Reveled: The CIA Believed a Media Mistake." The article shows that the whole "video" theme of the Susan Rice talking points was derived from the CIA accepting the reality of at least six media reports that had been filed which talked about demonstrations at Benghazi sparked by the anti-Islam video.
++Nancy Pelosi has complained to John Boehner that the make-up of the Special Committee is unfair and the rules do not allow for the Democrats to subpoena their own witnesses. Boehner's aides claim Democrats will be able to see documents beforehand, and ask questions.
++Charles Krauthammer seems to be getting the willies about the Committee after previously he had declared Benghazi worse than Watergate. He fears the consequences if the Committee looks partisan.
++The Democrats are still debating whether to participate at all. Louise Slaughter has objected that the families of the victims have called Democratic offices to say they don't want another hearing. They can't take anymore.

++I have read two posts at the DailyKos that argue the Democrats should participate and bring the real facts forward to challenge the GOP. Another argued quite interestingly that the Democrats must be visible challenging the committee because it is like the Swiftboating campaign against John Kerry. John Kerry considered the Swiftboat allegations so absurd that he never challenged them and thought he could ignore the smear campaign much to his loss. Another commentator mentioned that the Special Committee is likely to be "seen" as the authoritative account of Benghazi, even though several committees have already issued their reports. Therefore, the Democrats have to take their place at the table.
++I don't know the rules if one party refuses to participate. The press would be obliged to say everyday they cover the story that it is solely a partisan committee.
++As of now,I think the Democrats should hold out for subpoena power and written guarantees about access to documents and the right to respond.

GOP Alternative to Obamacare--Impeachment!
++Yesterday, I commented on Andrew Sullivan's remarks about "nihilistic extremism" but now Dana Millbank came up with the new craze among the House GOP--Impeachment. During the government shutdown, there was alot of good writing on how the House GOP was trying to "nullify" the last election. Now they are embarking on the real deal, even though they are reluctant to use the "I" word.
++Given the fact we only have 7 congressional days left in the year to accomplish things like a Defense Authorization Act,Farm Bill,and unemployment extension,what better way to spend Congress' time then to hold four sessions on Obamacare, talk about Space Aliens and discuss grounds for impeachment?
++While Republicans are dancing around the word,13 out of 22 Republicans on the Judiciary Committee have at one time threatened impeachment. Texan Steve Stockman has circulated Articles of Impeachment. Just last month, 20 members of the House filed Articles of Impeachment against Eric Holder. Strange how the majority came from Texas,which is under DOJ investigation for Voter Rights violations.
++So what are the gripes? Rep. Chaffetz and Senator Inhofe claim it's "Benghazi". Duncan Hunter came up with threatening to bomb Syria without congressional approval. Others denounce the bombing of Libya without congressional approval. Some argue his delay of provisions in the Affordable Care Act. Fox News even said that the healthcare website was an impeachable offense. Rep. Goodlatte believes that not since Nixon has a President selectively enforced the law.
++Choose your law. The refusal to defend DOMA or DADT. His selective waiving of immigration restrictions to allow young people from continuing their education without deportation. Easing federal enforcement of drug laws and evading the mandatory sentencing policies on drugs. And, of course, allowing the IRS to examine the 501-c-4 status of Tea Party groups.
++Trey Radel from Florida before he was busted for cocaine,said Obama's gun policy was impeachable. Michelle Bachmann said Obama is writing his own constitution to radically change America. Ted Cruz and Charles Krauthammer said Obama is basically lawless.
++Steven King argues for impeachment on the grounds Obama defaulted on the debt--which he has not. Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina argues if Obama unilaterally raised the debt ceiling it would be impeachable.
++Fox news commentator Eric Rush urged Americans to remove Obama by "any mean necessary".
++But this is now out of the Beltway as Hearst News and Fox broadcast these deliberations. So far the meaty items are "Benghazi talking points", the healthcare website and the promise you can keep your insurance. Really heavy stuff.
++The GOP through its endless attacks on Obama have lowered his approval rating, which encourage the House GOP to go for the kill. The House Judiciary Committee is --just a little taken back--by the absolute lack of interest in the Senate for their idea.
++But this is the logical end to the "nihilistic extremism" Andrew Sullivan wrote about. There is no there there. It is no coincidence that the bulk of the impeachment fans come from South of the Mason and Dixon.

Welcome the 113th Congress
++This past week Barack Hussein Obama was re-elected President as Vice President Biden looked on as the electoral votes were counted.
++The 112th Congress is no more, boasting the worst record of accomplishment in our nation's history and goes out with a sizzling 12% approval rating, the lowest since polling began.
++The new Congress was sworn in and went promptly on recess until the end of the month.
++Congratulations to all the new members. Especially pleasing was to see now Senator Elizabeth Warren, Heidi Heitkampf and the large number of women Senators and House members.
++President Obama is gearing up to introduce new gun control legislation when he returns to Washington today. Mitch McConnell has vowed that this must take back seat to the debt.
++President Obama has vowed not to negotiate over raising the debt ceiling this time. Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi are falling in line. During W's presidency, Congress raised the debt ceiling 19 times without quarrel. Republicans are now split over this maneuver, some fearing a public backlash.
++David Frum commented this week that House Republicans talking about entitlement reform are aiming at their base, which is seniors, and the rest of the Caucus appear like desperadoes,whom you could never trust with government.
++Barney Frank spent the week lobbying for the post of interim Senator from Massachusetts. Frank argues the next two months will be the most important in our country's financial future with the debt ceiling row,the entitlement/sequestration argument and the budget flap. The US government has not had a budget since 1996.
++President Obama stated he would finalize the nominees for the national security posts this coming week. The spotlight is on Chuck Hagel, who has drawn the fire of the gay community for his attitudes expressed in the 1990s and the neocons and the pro-Israeli hawks.
++Charles Krauthammer had a column yesterday in the Washington Post arguing that the Fiscal Cliff debate revealed the true Obama as a social democrat. Only a few weeks earlier President Obama said that he would be considered a moderate Republican. Expect the pundit puzzle over Obama's true identity to play out over the next four years.
++Republicans are beginning to wise up to the fact that the Fiscal Cliff agreement ended the days of supply side economics.
++The kindler, gentler GOP has not surfaced. Hurricane Sandy aid barely passed the new congress with the Slave state Republicans voting against it. Washington Monthly did an analysis of the Fiscal Cliff vote and found almost an identical regional breakdown to the Civil War states,including Republicans from the Union states voting for it.
++Before the Hurricane Sandy vote, Michelle Bachmann introduced the first bill in the House--the Repeal of Obamacare,making this almost three dozen times this has been introduced.
++Steven King of Iowa introduced a bill to outlaw anchor babies, the most pressing issue facing the country. He was joined by Louis Gohlmart on this important legislation, which violates the 14th Amendment of the Constitution.
++Progressives have noticed that the cuts in sequestration protect the big three-Social Security,Medicare and Medicaid. House Republicans have introduced a new bill that would "restore" the $780 million the Romney-Ryan campaign said that Obama cut from the program. It seems a bit bizarre when the House is screaming about entitlement cuts that the GOP is considering this.
++Senators Cornyn,Graham and McCain are vowing to destroy the country's credit-rating on the debt ceiling debate unless dramatic cuts are made to the social welfare net. Veterans of the Clinton Administration have commented that these people believe that the national debt is that of the Obama family and not accrued by Congress. The advice is to hold fire. Nancy Pelosi now urges President Obama to invoke the 14th Amendment to avoid the debt ceiling fiasco. The White House continues to put out the word that are against this. But the President can authorize Treasury to pay the bills.
++It is likely the 113th Congress will be even more polarized that the departing one. Now the idea is to make President Obama a premature lame duck. The GOP strategy hasn't changed from obstructionism since the last election.
++Knowing they needed to patch up relations with women, the GOP has gone full ahead with their anti-abortion agenda, passing restrictive laws in Michigan and introducing them in Virginia. Planned Parenthood is being de-funded in Texas and Oklahoma. More anti-abortion and contraception bills are being introduced in the House.
++The Senate may or may not pass a filibuster reform bill. Observers thought Mitch McConnell bought some time with his approval of scores of Obama nominees that had been held up for the 2012 Congress.
++The White House plans an early blitz on gun control to take the NRA off-guard. I believe it could pass the Senate but never the House.
++Denny Hastert--not Haskert as I mentioned in the previous blog--warned John Boehner not to avoid the Hastert rule unless he wanted to lose control of the House. The Fiscal Cliff vote was a perfect example of how a popular law could pass with only a small Republican vote and a large Democratic vote.
++The final votes for the House races are in and the Democrats won by over 1 million votes. The House GOP keep saying this was a status quo election. In fact if they had not so severely gerrymandered the House districts, the Democrats would have won control. As it is, Democrats can not win control of the House unless they beat Republicans by over 6%. Very tough to do.

America The Exceptional--Kochistan
Steve Benen at Washington Monthy justed noted that Mitt Romney, who has refused to be on the stage with other Republican contenders so far, has agreed to kiss the Koch Brothers' ring at the Presidential Summit on Spending and Job Creation, which is funded by the crime family. Steve notes that the Romney family has received Koch funding before. Mitt should remember what happened to the first Mormon who wanted to run for President in 1848. The sect's founder Joseph Smith ended up shot in an Illinois jell cell. He may be lured to New Hampshire by Koch assassins. Joining the Mitt will be Tim Pawlenty, Rick Santorum and Michelle Bachmann.
Remember I wrote it first that Glenn Beck was the stalking horse of the Mormon candidacy of Mitt Romney. Beck has recently attacked Mike Huckabee as a "progressive" Republican or "someone like John McCain" who increases the size of government and has increased taxes while Governor of Arkansas. This odd spat got played out with Huckabee blasting back but the tenor of it was so odd as to reveal Beck's other agenda.
Meanwhile Newt and his lovely Bride Calixto or Calista will appear in their new film "American Exceptionalism", which will be a call to arms to reassert America's special nature--being owned by the Koch Brothers. Newt keeps cancelling appearances at candidate fora because he can't quite wrap up his business empire. He still has too many trinkets to sell.
Tim Pawlenty is really on a roll. After declaring that Planned Parenthood practices euthanasia because they operate in areas serving the poor, He burst on the scene at the NRA to declare that President Obama doesn't understand America and that we are an exceptional country. Wayne LaPierre told his fanatically member that the presidential election will be determined by states with Big Guns and hunting and that Obama will lose. (Of course, Obama never did confiscate the guns as conservatives promised.)
This will be the theme for the foreign policy section of the Republicans in 2012. Charles Krauthammer put teeth in this today with op-ed in the Washington Post by blasting President Obama's lead from behind strategy. He argues that Obama lacks a doctrine--Gee, we have already benefited from so many doctrines--has bowed to the inevitable emergence of China as the world leader and acts quietly because Obama believes the world hates us. As Charles pounds his chest, the world has always hated us and the Chinese are just a regional power. Watch this become a major thread in the arguments leading up to 2012.
Karl Rove is hurt saying that President Obama is waging a dirty campaign for re-election. I guess unlike Karl's genteel Swift Boater effort against John Kerry. No one yet has mentioned that , despite Rove's contention then that the Swift Boaters were not linked to the Bush campaign, that all those who bankrolled the effort were the first donors to underwrite Rove's mysterious Crossroads (Crosshairs) America. Rove said that it was Obama's fault that birtherism took over the Republican party, that the President had played rope-a-dope and made the GOP seem wacky. Of course, Rove says this was all to distract everyone from the serious problems the country has. Which is the perfect inverse of what President Obama said that his release of his birth certificate can allow us to get back to those issues. It looks like Rove is making a comeback. Here I agree with the Donald that Rove should retire.
Conservative Human Events is reporting what I have been noting that Mike Huckabee, the frontrunner for 2012, is sending signals he will not run. He has been avoiding all the candidate fora and telling former supporters to find other candidates. But I'm not sure that he will be allowed to cop out because if Romney is wounded by Romneycare, then if Huckabee doesn't run, Charles Koch will force David to come out and say he's been Born-Again. The Billionaire Club must secured the allegiance of the Religious Right if their plan for the final conquest of America is to succeed.
Inside the Beltway strategists are now talking up a Romney-Petraeus ticket. The one spoilsport to this seems to be Marc Thiessen who says that Petraeus is soft on torture--i.e. he prohibits torture. The problem with this scenario is that no one else in America believes the Iraq was worthwhile. It's not like Ike defeating Hitler. But I was at a Republican event last week and they really still believe in the Iraq war. It was stunning. They glowed when they talked about it. So Petraeus is their hero. What happens when they find out he's a self-described Rockefeller Republican?
We have only about two weeks to go until the world ends so we should expect alot of our religious friends to be "raptured", which would do wonders for our political system.

After declaring that Planned Parenthood practices euthanasia because they operate in areas serving the poor, He burst on the scene at the NRA to declare that President Obama doesn't understand America and that we are an exceptional country. Wayne LaPierre told his fanatically member that the presidential election will be determined by states with Big Guns and hunting and that Obama will lose. (Of course, Obama never did confiscate the guns as conservatives promised.)
This will be the theme for the foreign policy section of the Republicans in 2012. Charles Krauthammer put teeth in this today with op-ed in the Washington Post by blasting President Obama's lead from behind strategy. He argues that Obama lacks a doctrine--Gee, we have already benefited from so many doctrines--has bowed to the inevitable emergence of China as the world leader and acts quietly because Obama believes the world hates us. As Charles pounds his chest, the world has always hated us and the Chinese are just a regional power. Watch this become a major thread in the arguments leading up to 2012.
Karl Rove is hurt saying that President Obama is waging a dirty campaign for re-election. I guess unlike Karl's genteel Swift Boater effort against John Kerry. No one yet has mentioned that , despite Rove's contention then that the Swift Boaters were not linked to the Bush campaign, that all those who bankrolled the effort were the first donors to underwrite Rove's mysterious Crossroads (Crosshairs) America. Rove said that it was Obama's fault that birtherism took over the Republican party, that the President had played rope-a-dope and made the GOP seem wacky. Of course, Rove says this was all to distract everyone from the serious problems the country has. Which is the perfect inverse of what President Obama said that his release of his birth certificate can allow us to get back to those issues. It looks like Rove is making a comeback. Here I agree with the Donald that Rove should retire.
Conservative Human Events is reporting what I have been noting that Mike Huckabee, the frontrunner for 2012, is sending signals he will not run. He has been avoiding all the candidate fora and telling former supporters to find other candidates. But I'm not sure that he will be allowed to cop out because if Romney is wounded by Romneycare, then if Huckabee doesn't run, Charles Koch will force David to come out and say he's been Born-Again. The Billionaire Club must secured the allegiance of the Religious Right if their plan for the final conquest of America is to succeed.
Inside the Beltway strategists are now talking up a Romney-Petraeus ticket. The one spoilsport to this seems to be Marc Thiessen who says that Petraeus is soft on torture--i.e. he prohibits torture. The problem with this scenario is that no one else in America believes the Iraq was worthwhile. It's not like Ike defeating Hitler. But I was at a Republican event last week and they really still believe in the Iraq war. It was stunning. They glowed when they talked about it. So Petraeus is their hero. What happens when they find out he's a self-described Rockefeller Republican?
We have only about two weeks to go until the world ends so we should expect alot of our religious friends to be "raptured", which would do wonders for our political system.
