Washington Post Doesn't Disappoint

++The Washington Post in an editorial came out against the Iran deal because it fell below President Obama's statements about a deal in 2009.

++The Post made their most strenuous reservations that Obama must reassure our friends in the Middle East--read Bibi and Saudi Arabia.

++However,on their front page is an analysis by Ishaaan Tharoor who says that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action has surprised those who know about nuclear weapons by its thoroughness and detail. They feel such detail bodes well for its implementation by June.

++Sean Hannity railed that we were giving nukes to Iran who only days before threatened to annihilate Israel. Unfortunately he had Patrick Buchanan on who reminded Sean that Nikita Krushchev treatened to bury us and was the next year in the White House negotiating with Eisenhower.

++Sean Hannity pulled the Hitler card by citing Churchill's stance against the Nazis.

++Buchanan won't let up. He said that Iran doesn't even have a nuclear weapon but Bibi has over 200 and we should be afraid of Iran. They are fighting our enemies. Buchanan went on to say that the reason Iran is not contained is because Sean's friend W invaded Iraq and the Shiites won the election.

++This will only heat up. But the details are there for everyone to debate. The Post hopes for a full debate on the deal. Even the Post forgets that this was a deal negotiated with 5 other nations who will not keep the sanctions regime on Iran.

New York Is Saved and Other Sunday Notes

++Sean Hannity made good on his promise and has moved to Florida but keeping a ranch in Texas. New Yorkers can breathe easier now.

++In the ceremony opening the 9-11 Museum, the program deleted the scheduled musical interlude of "A Bridge over Troubled Waters" after Chris Christie spoke.

++California is burning as forest fires ramped up again as the entire state is considered a drought zone.

++April was the second hottest in recorded history.

++Richard Scaife, the 81-year old owner of the Pittsburgh Tribune has incurable cancer. Dick Scaife was a primary funder of conservative causes and institutions for generations.

++This week you can read about the largest funders of the Right in the new book "Sons of Wichita", which chronicles the history of the Scaife family and their emergence on the political scene. Goodies include inter-family disputes ,including private eyes, in the dispute over the father's estate,David's hedonistic heydays, the family's blackmailing the gay son, and the long history of federal violations. The book doesn't flinch from Dad, who favored Mussolini.

++Australia reports that "carbon sink", the capacity of the ocean to absorb carbon, has reached the tipping point where it threatens the entire marine food chain.

++Greenland is melting at a faster rate than previously thought but here in North America, glaciers in British Columbia and Alaska are melting even faster and getting now news coverage.

++Karl Rove this morning doubled down on Hillary's "brain damage" and Rinse Penis said that Hillary's health and age are fair game.

++This week may not be a good one for Karl Rove. There is a story about to emerge about his divorce and his ex-wife accusing Karl of having an affair with a man. I'm betting it doesn't emerge because of Rovian pressures and that gay is so passé.

++There has been an explosion of same-sex marriage decisions and stays it's getting confusing. Arkansas, Utah, Idaho, and the list goes on.

++Michael Lind has a provocative article in Salon about possible party alignments because of the death of "social conservatism".

++Conservative websites are attacking Jeb Bush for a host of imaginary ideological crimes but the nastiest writing is attacking his wife. They claim she doesn't like being a political wife, she isn't fluent in English, has the well-documented problem with Customs, bringing in significant purchases without declaring them. But I guess if you can attack Michelle Obama , you can attack Jeb's wife. Doonesbury today has a fake Jeb interview for good fun.

++The Right--or at least the social conservatives who met the other year at Mount Vernon--met here in Washington behind closed doors. Considering the GOP thinks this is their year, what are the Right complaining about--the nature of the GOP.

++Rubio must be running. He again asserted his anti-choice position and denied climate change. That's pretty ballsy considering this week scientific blogs ran maps how Miami and southern Florida will disappear because of the rise in the sea.

++This past week's announcement that the West Antarctic ice sheets are collapsing faster than expected raise the issue of how conservative climate scientists are. The UN report undervalued the impact of the melting poles and glaciers on the climate. What you have read is really worse.

++Ms. Geller is back hiring busses to run her anti-Islam ads and ,of course, invoked the Holocaust. Could we reach agreement that the term "Holocaust" be used only for the Holocaust. And "Hitler" is the historical figure Hitler and not Barack Obama.

White Men Uprising

++After the Bundy rancher episode, the John Birch Society, which was let back into the conservative movement at CPAC during the Obama years, promises that there will be armed confrontations with the federal government.

++Larry Klayman of Judicial Watch wrote a scree on in World Nut Daily calling for the overthrow of President Obama because of the Bureau for Land Management moving against Bundy's cattle grazing on public land.

++Bundy seems to believe the constitutional doctrine of Skousen, the radical rightwing Mormon who J. Edgar Hoover believed was "too anti-Communist". He later left the FBI and became a professor in Utah writing books against FDR and the federal government.

++The Bundy episode brought out the Oathkeepers, the libertarian paramilitary group, the militias from other Western states, and money from the Tea Party Groups.

++With the support of Bundy from Fox News and Sean Hannity, you begin to wonder what happen to the rightwing who was for law and order and patriotism.

++The question I have is will the May 15th demonstration here in Washington abandon their policy of not urging their followers to bring guns when they demand the removal of the federal government?

++With the killings around the Jewish Center in Kansas by a former leader of the KKK,CNN asked the penetrating question of "Whether the KKK can re-brand themselves?" and naturally found the Grand Dragon who said that they can have segregation without violence.

The Days of Our Lives

++Roe vs. Wade marked its 41st anniversary. Only 25,000 braved the cold weather to protest. Ricky Cantor told the crowd that he was going to insure that the government never pays for abortion--which it doesn't. House Republicans passed a bill for the IRS to audit all women who have had abortions to ensure they don't take it off as a tax deduction. Tom Cotton of Arkansas is introducing a bill that would give fertilized eggs constitutional rights. Weirdly, poll numbers today about abortion mirror almost exactly those from 41 years ago. There has been no movement toward the anti-abortion position in all these years.

++Sean Hannity was miffed that Andrew Cuomo said that there was no room in New York state for extreme conservatives. Hannity said he was going to move from New York in protest but later claimed he really couldn't because so many people were dependent on his show. He does say he may run for public office in Florida. He will be attending the State of the Union Address next Tuesday as a guest of American hero, Louie Gohmert.

++The Secret Service visited the Florida Republican who wants to lynch President obama, saying that the situation has moved beyond impeachment.

++Supreme Commander Major General Paul Valley launched his Operation American Spring in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a fitting place to advocate the overthrow of the government since the state was the first to secede from the Union.

++Marco Rubio plans to make Americans pay higher premiums for Obamacare by sponsoring a bill to eliminate the risk pool guarantees for the health insurance industry. He has twelve sponsors.

++Brainwrap has been driving himself crazy trying to reconcile his numbers for Obamacare. The total with Medicaid is now 11.9 million. Medicaid expansion is now 6.3 million.

++Jeffrey Toobin in the latest New Yorker has a iece on the President's Bipartisan Commission on Elections. Yes, it came out and it shows voter fraud is infinitesimal. The suggestions to enlarge the franchise are totally sane so they don't stand a chance of passing. The same I might add to the revised Voting Rights Act written by Senator Leahy and Rep. Sesenbrenner.

++The President's Privacy Board came out today and said the NSA mass collection of phone information was illegal.

++Governor Bob McDonnell and his wife were indicted for corruption in Virginia.

++Virginia Attorney General Herring said today he was joining a suit against the state's anti-same sex marriage law.

++Virginians may escape the bullet this year. Democratic Jennifer Wexton won the special seat for the Senate in a blizzard. The win may put the Democrats in control of that body. Another seat is waiting for a recount. Meanwhile the first poll has come out with Mark Warner holding a fifty point lead over Gillespie.

++The Cooch called for Chris Christie to step down as head of the Republican Governor's Association.

++The U.S. Attorney told Dawn Zimmer, the Mayor of Hoboken to stop doing media interviews. The FBI has been interviewing her staff and aides about her claims and apparently five people support her version of her meeting with the Lt.Gov.

++Chris Christie has fallen in popularity and now the GOP front-runner is Rand Paul.

++The President is going to focus on income inequality in his State of the Union Address. A stunning report shows that 85 people have more wealth than the poorest 3.5 billion combined.

President Obama Unscripted

On a slow news day, President Obama made a surprise appearance at the White House press room and delivered unscripted remarks about the Trayvon Martin case and why the African-American community has been emotional about it.

Only the day before Eugene Robinson wrote in the Post that the President wasn't the right one to talk about race given the guff he gets every attempt he's made from the Henry Gates incident on has provoked backlash. But sure enough, the man did it and succeeded.

President Obama's remarks about how he knows what it is to be followed in department stores and car locks clicking when he walks by triggered a flood of African-American males on television recalling similar incidents. The refrain was that each African American male has to sit down and tell his son the same things his father taught him about dealing with the police, how to to look threatening, how to be polite.

Two most interesting responses, I thought, were Michael Steele, the former RNC Chairman, talking about being followed by cops in Rock Creek Park, and Jonathan Capehart, Post editorial writer and MSNBC contributor. How this is the sorry war story of African-American males was demonstrated by Eric Holder talking to the NAACP about "The Talk" he had to give his son and the audience just murmuring their agreement.

I found Capehart's story the saddest. Here is a young nerdy black guy with glasses who could not be perceived as threatening in the least. You would have to be a raving racist to think otherwise. He was moving because he was in the White House briefing room when President Obama made his remarks. He said his eyes filled with tears when the President talked about his own personal experience that he himself had shared.

Former presidential candidate John McCain complimented the President on his remarks, calling them "impressive" and picked up on his remarks on the "Stand Your Ground"Laws, which McCain said should be reviewed in all the states, including his own Arizona. While the major media were--by and large--complimentary like FOX News Wallace, others thought it was race-baiting and polarizing. Former George W. Bush press spokeswoman Dana Perino criticized Obama for not talking about black males shooting white babies. Sean Hannity blasted the President, suggesting he identified with Trayvon Martin's drug use.

While some argued it was too late in the African-American communities, there was much relief that the President stood up for the anguish and anxiety the community felt over the not guilty verdict. During the weekend hundreds of cities held marches in solidarity with the Martin family and for justice in the case. And should be said that even after the verdict there was little violence except police riots in L.A. and Oakland.

I found the President's remarks refreshing and his call for a national conversation on the subject appropriate. While this case was especially fraught with racial overtones, the big elephant in the room seems to me the economic and social issues facing all young males in society, white, black and Hispanic. We are commemorating mass shootings in Aurora ,Tucson and Newtown carried out by white males, a Boston bombing carried out by another young male and a shooting in Sanford, Florida by a Hispanic cop wannabe. Homicides caused by guns since Newtown have far eclipsed the deaths in the entire Iraq war. Ladies and gentlemen, we not only have a gun problem but a Young Male Problem.
