The sitting Attorney General of Wisconsin read aloud his letter to the Majority leader of the Wisconsin that it was illegal for him to go ahead with the planned vote. But Fitzgerald did it anyway.
Governor Walker applauded the Legislature standing up to the status quo. He claimed that the bill "would ensure Wisconsin has a business climate that allows the private sector to create 250,000 jobs." None of this makes any real-world sense.
The D.C. Lobbying Firm,BGP has announced they will raising funds next week for all the Wisconsin Republican legislators here in town.
But here's the rub. If the bill has fiscal implications for the state, it is unconstitutional because such a bill requires a quorum. A few Wisconsin observers have argued that anything having to do with collective bargaining, medical insurance or payment to public workers has fiscal implications. Others just say that if it doesn't have a fiscal implication then Governor Walker was simply lying all along.
State Senator Mark Miller said,:" In thirty minutes, 18 state sentors undid 50 years of civil rights in Wisconsin. Tonight, 18 senate Republicans conspired to take the government back from the people."
Some blame the unions for being caught flat-footed on this. Another Democratic legislator claimed that passing the bill this way was already illegal according to Wisconsin laws about open meetings.
If you get a chance, check out Karl Rove's anti-union and anti-Obama ad for Wisconsin. It's a foretaste for 2012.
