Chanting "Russia Is Our Friend", Spencer and his white supremacists held burning torches to protect the statue of Robert E. Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia.
New York Magazine on the Alt-Right singles out Spencer as one of the trust fund babies who are the white nationalists. Spencer's family are sugar moguls in Louisiana and are staunch Republicans.
Just after the Trump inauguration, Spencer was the focus of controversy here in Old Town, Alexandria, where he rented an apartment for his non-profit. A couple weeks of demonstration he seemed to move on.
