Shame pushed the secret dismantling of the ethics watchdog but the new House rules allow social security,Medicare, and Medicaid to be "discretionary" expenditures. This would allow the House to cut them over the period of the new budget. Coupled with Senate Enzi's Senate bill to allow budget reconciliation, the Republicans can repeal Obamacare without a Democratic veto or filibuster. It will only take 50 votes in the Senate to pass a budget.
These shenanigans must be made public and the Democrats must demand public hearings and debate over such massive destruction of the social welfare net.
This is partying like it is 1920. And the American people literally would not know. A change in the ethics bipartisan watchdog should have been publicly debated and not been done in the night before the new Congress could convene.
These issues are too important not to be debated about. Dismantling our healthcare system and cutting social security benefits are too important not to be subject to an open debate both in Congress and the country.
