Court rumors and random detritus

Kudos to Jonathan Turley and his comment on Harold Koh, the former Assistant Sec of State for Democracy and Human Rights. "Picking Harold Koh would be like putting Louis Brandeis on the Court." Nice and true.

The White House knocked down the rumor, which was fueled by Orrin Hatch this morning, that the pick would be Hillary Clinton. "She's doing a terrific job as Secretary of State."

On the short list is also Former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears. 55 years old, she was the first African-American woman to serve as a judge in Georgia and was the only African-American woman to be the chief justice of any state court. She was the youngest person in Georgia's history to ever sit on the bench. She is a liberal Democrat and is friends with Clarence Thomas.

On the weird side of political studies, it is shown that if a person's income increases two quarters before an election this would dramatically favor the incumbent party. The Democrats have $500 billion left in the stimulus package to spend.

The Newt has been trapsing around the country under the media's radar with Dave Barton, Mr. Christian Revisionist, cutting DVD explaining why the separation between church and state is antithetical to the beliefs of the founding fathers. Barton is known to the general public through Glenn Beck and has appeared at Glen Beck's revival meetings in Florida. Newt has been palling around with the fundamentalists for the past two years, even though he converted to Catholicism at the same time. When he ranted about Obama's "secular, socialist machine", he was talking the language of the Christian Nationalist Movement and the John Birchers who have been resurrected from the dead and disgrace by conservatives and fundamentalists. When Newt spoke about the Baked Alaskan as a feminist icon, he was referring to this creepy group who support Michelle Bachmann and other Christian Nationalists. The Baked Alaskan only has a 21% approval rating among real women.

Dan Savage, America's favorite sex columnist, spent some time challenging Bristol Palin's abstinence commercial by saying there were a number of creative ways to have sex and not get pregnant. The long list sounded kind of fun.

Senator John Ensign, the paragon of family values, says he will not resign from the Senate, although he might be behind bars before the FBI gets through.

Conservative critics are challenging the appropriateness of the Nuke Summit. The complaints range from the absence of our key allies (this list gets stranger as weeks go on) to Obama should be spending his time working on creating jobs. Long out of memory is the Bush Administration's actions in this very area and the time when Dick Lugar wrote that "the existential threat to all nations is nuclear terrorism." I guess Obama made the mistake in not raising the Terror Warning Code.

While Washington pundits were buzzing about Bibi Netanyahu's snub of the meeting, Hilary Clinton had to explain that Dan Meridor, his deputy and a high-level Israeli delegation was here. That doesn't negate the rift that exists but both sides are not as crazy as people make out.

Anwar al-Awlaq wants off Obama's hit list. The American born cleric, who has urged terrorist attacks from his refuge in Yemen, wants the United States to cease and desist and he'll keep quiet. Apparently, his father Nasser went to visit him and try to talk him out of his militancy. His father is also concerned that the whole Al-Awlaq tribe, which is heavily armed, will take to anti-American terrorism.

But across the bridge where we can carry openly, Daniel Almond is holding his Open Carry/ Restore the Constitution Rally. He's bringing together former heads of state militias and in the past he has been known to hang out with neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan and the Christian Identity people. It should be a great time for the family--bring the kids. He says he is fighting the "tyranny of the majority" and that he doesn't want to court any 51% of the people or courts. We don't need no f---king Courts.

The teabagger Republican candidate for governor of New York shows he's hip to Michael Steele's sextytime. He likes to e-mail porno showing horse/female copulation, Miss France in a porno video and racist videos of Michelle and Barack Obama dressed as a prostitute and a pimp. He says he's not going to be "politically correct" and sometimes he sends some racy stuff but what the hey? I guess it was the bestiality he thought was "politically incorrect".
