Trump and his team agreed to sideline the Ukraine as a campaign issue. As we saw the Republican platform was changed on the Ukraine from giving military support to aid. He would raise the US/NATO defense commitments of Eastern europe and the Baltics because Putin wanted these issues cauterized.
The Guardian also reports that the FBI early on went to the FISA Court to get warrants on four Trump campaign staffers but were denied until October. The FISA Court grants the government almost 99% of their requests. We don't know how extensive the investigation is.
