The History of Friday the 13th

You can learn new things everyday. Why do we believe Friday the 13th is unlucky? And why have always felt it was lucky for me? None of it makes any sense.

In Martin Booth's new book "The Secret History of the World as Laid Down by Secret Societies", we find out. Church authorities were terrified by the proliferation of esoteric influences on Christianity through mysticism and cabalism. One of the prime culprits were the Knight Templars, which had their own temples and wealth independent of the crown or church.

On Friday 13 October 1307 the kings of Europe moved to eradicate the influence of these elements on society. Just before dawn, the French King, Philip the Fair, descended on the temples and lodgings of the Templars, arresting some 15,000 people. Philip had pressured Pope Clement to publish a Bill of Abolition, putting and end to the Knights Templar. They were tortured to confess to everything from sodomy to worshipping a goat-headed idol.

Only a few of the knights--from La Rochelle on the Atlantic Coast--managed to escape.

They fled to Scotland, where they lived under the protection of the rebel king--
Robert the Bruce.
