The Killings at Mother Emmanuel

+Dylann Root planned the shooting for six months, according to his roommate. Root wanted to start a race war-an old bugaboo that keeps surfacing among white supremacists. Root was into segregation and wore patches from the apartheid regime of South Africa. He spent an hour at the church before gunning people down while they were in prayer.

+He was rather quickly arrested because he didn't hide who he was and left a survivor, who claimed he said," you people rape my people and you are taking over the country."

+White 20-something males seem to appear in all the mass killings of recent years. Rude Pundit wrote today that it is all about guns. You will not eliminate racism, bigotry, poverty, but add guns to the mix and you get lethal violence. He blasted politicians who compromise all the time with the NRA and others to allow lax gun laws.

+President Obama speaking for the 14th time after a mass murder said that nowhere does this happen in the developed world except in the United States. He spoke almost whimsically that political Washington can do nothing about it. He knows. He followed Sandy Hook Elementary School, when public opinion was high with measures to curb guns. Only to find it blocked by the Senate. The first serious executive orders came after the killing of those grade-school children.

+Hillary Clinton, who had campaigned in South Carolina only the day before told the National Latin Congress that the United States must grapple with the issues of race and gun violence because we are being torn apart.

+Rick Santorum came up a unique perspective that the killing of the people at Emmanuel was an attack on religious freedom.

+By and large the GOP candidates, including The Donald, said the appropriate things.

+Fox News suggested that the people at Emmanuel should have had guns. This theme percolated through my e-mails from conservatives.

+The Washington Monthly reminded everyone that white males attacking black churches has gone on too long in the South and still is nauseating. The congregation of Emmanuel were prohibited for years during slavery of holding church services and held them underground. The church was a pioneer in ending slavery and backing the push for equal rights even pre-dating Martin Luther King,Jr.'s effort.

+Nothing will happen. Dylann is probably a paranoid schizophrenic. And his father gave him his gun on his 21st birthday.
