Gene Sharp writes about the active technique of struggle and the various situations which is applied. The book contains case studies from the Russian Revolution of 1905 through Gandhi and the Civil Rights Movement to the modern democratic movements in Central Europe and the Balkans.

Sharp's work is valuable for discussing the different types of struggle and the different forces to be confronted.
