++President Obama was emotional, often tearful in announcing his new executive orders on gun safety. He invoked Newtown,Charleston,Aurora saying that these people had rights, too, that were taken away from them. He hit on every religious community that has been scared by gun violence and ended by invoking a young teenager who shielded three girls only to be shot in the head.
++President Obama invoked the fierce urgency of now in outlining the steps he is taking. One of them is to close the gunshot loophole, another is to demand comprehensive background checks on gun buyers, and still another a commitment for additional funds too be spent on mental health. He invoked the technology of IPADS that allow you to locate a lost IPAD insisting gun manufacturers can make guns that small kids can't use by mistake.
++The audience included Gabby Gifford, the parents of Newtown and other relatives of gun victims. President Obama has had to announce mass shootings throughout his presidency and it was clear that this impacted the tone and tenor of the speech.
++A good performance. But already I have received e-mails from the Right that this is executive overreach and that gun manufacturers don't want the new technology "imposed" on them. I haven't seen the NRA's rebuttal.
