Countdown to Carless Life

+The good news is that the city of Alexandria refunds all membership fees to ZIPCAR as part of their effort to cut down on the car traffic. The other plus is that there is a ZIPCAR stand two blocks away.

+Tuesday is the D-Day after I say go back to my mortally wounded Escape and return the plates. Tuesday is also when the new Congress convenes. Is this going to be the perfect storm of misery.

+Meanwhile, the American dollar has hit a nine-year high. Good for travelers.

+President Obama slipped home yesterday but has the good sense to leave town for a pre-State of the Unions tour where he will try out some of his themes for the new year.

+The Democrats in the Senate received 20 million more votes than the GOP majority. Last time in 2010,the Democrats received millions more than the House GOP and look what we got.

+David Duke is using the Steve Scalise flap to re-emerge on the national scene to defend "European American" rights. See how racism is adaptable to the 21st century?

+Edward Brooke, a classy man who was the first African American to serve in the Senate since Reconstruction died at the age of 95. And he was a Republican.

+George P. Bush in his new position as Land Commissioner of Texas is suing the town of Denton because they vote to prohibit frackkers in their town.

+The United States is threatening to withhold aid to the Palestinian Authority because it has applied to the International Criminal Court. Israel has withheld the tax payments to the Palestinian Authority for the same reason.

+12 countries in the Florida Panhandle came up with an ingenious solution to same-sex marriage. Just don't have any marriages at courthouses. See no discrimination. Same sex marriages start tomorrow in Florida.

+Think Progress reports there really is a glimmer of hope on the very conservative 5th Circuit Court that it will uphold same sex marriage. Right now the split is one Obama appointed judge, one W judge who is a self-proclaimed rightwing activist, and a Reagan appointed judge who claims she has become more left than her colleagues. So far the Reagan appointed judges have been solid on sam sex marriage.

+The New York Times reports today how Republicans are resorting to the courts to attack President Obama's agenda. Remember the cries of judicial activism?
