The Response to the Obama-Castro Meeting

+Marco Rubio, who is going to announce for President on Monday at Freedom Square in Miami, condemned Obama meeting with the dictator and has blasted normalization because Obama didn't extract concessions. Obama got the release of 52 political prisoners and Cason, the former USAID contractor.

+Ted Cruz, Lindsey Graham and Jeb Bush condemned the meeting.

+Rubio, Cruz and Jeb are part of the anti-Castro lobby.

+But think about this. The United States is the most isolated country in the world on the issue of Cuba.We lose votes consistently in the United Nations on our embargo. The entire hemisphere now is against the economic embargo. For us to normalize relations and lift the embargo is a diplomatic coup for us.

+Where does this all leave the GOP? Remember the Taiwan lobby? The GOP is now looking like they only want relations with Israel, even though they only have one Jewish congressman.

+They have written off our own hemisphere. See the file on immigration policy. They have written off all diplomatic solutions. Read the Iran deal file. They are wobbly on NATO, very suspicious of Western Europe. And they are left with only military force and economic sanctions.

+It's a global economy. Pressing for more sanctions on Iran might make Americans feel good but the rest of the sanctions regime will go. China has deals preposition for that time and Russia has signed a huge arms deal and is scheduled to erect at least 6 more nuclear energy plants.

+If the GOP suffers from epistemic closure on domestic affairs, the same applies to international relations. I can't see a way for them to get out of it.

+Germany is already pressing back against Obama on further Russian sanctions? How do you think they will react against the GOP?

+It's very depressing. Even in matters of war, where are they on the Authorization to use force? Crickets. There is no discussion going on.

+Monday, they debate Corker's bill. Already the GOP is adding amendments that would make it unpalatable to Democrats. Rubio has an amendment that Iran must recognize Israel. There is another about "Renouncing terrorism". None of which are related to the nuclear issue.

+I hate to bother folks, but what will you do if the Iran talks fail? Bibi is a blowhard. He can't destroy a vast nuclear network. The GOP is just whistling in the dark if they believe the American public would go for this. Americans hate Iran but go to war over a non-existent bomb?

+So back to Cuba,as President Obama said,it does not pose a national security threat to the United States. He ruled out regime change. What's your alternative as he always asks?
